Sluts A Go-Go Glamour Night circa 1981. Doris Fish, Miss X, and Freda Lay pose before a night out in 1940’s glamour drag. Photographs by Greg (Ginger Quest) Foss. This is one of the rare moments in the dorisfish.com archive for which we have both photographs and film.
Inexpensive vintage fashions were easy to find in thrift shops back then and the Sluts drag room was stuffed with them. Doris, Tippi and X also had small feet, so their vintage shoe collection was astonishing.
The Sluts are posing on the fabulous turquoise Chesterfield sofa in the mirrored and fun-fur-lined living room of 422 Oak St, Ginger Quest’s apartment shared with Doris in the early 1980s. The apartment was site of the party that inspired their cult film ‘Vegas In Space’, and key scenes were filmed in the same room.
Drag newcomer Miss X’s Joan Crawford inspired style was coming into fabulous focus, while this restrained look by Doris is a departure for her. She is so beautiful. Freda Lay is wearing the gold Marilyn dress and wig that would be seen repeatedly on Doris and Tippi in West Graphics greeting cards.
Freda was one of the original Sluts A Go-Go, but was famously inconsistent (she had a fondness for bad men and good drugs) and drifted away by the mid-eighties, leaving Doris, X and Tippi as the core founding members.
