TONIGHT! Doris Fish gets her Oscar moment at the Academy of Motion Pictures museum in LA with the screening of Vegas In Space! Will we see you there??? Phillip R Ford and Miss X will be onstage in discussion with Michael Varrati, cinematographer Robin Clark and co-stars Sandelle Kincaid and Ramona Fischer will be in attendance, plus super fans Robyn Adams of Doris Fish Forever. We were there last year to see Peaches Christ and Michael Varrati host a Midnight Mass with Elvira and we debuted the Captain Tracey doll prototype.
Thank you for supporting our project on it’s first day! We are off to a respectable start for a project making dolls based on a relatively unknown cult movie. As much as I’d like to reach our goal immediately, I’ve always known this is something that will build over time. We need to create new fans, and that takes time. Really, the social energy of a Kickstarter campaign is a great way to spread awareness, regardless of whether it reaches its funding goal. A lot more people know about Vegas in Space today than they did before as a result of this campaign.
For the last year the Doris Fish Forever archive has been sharing the history of Doris Fish and the Sluts A Go-Go, preserving hundreds of photos and digitizing rare Betamax videos from Doris’ personal collection. The goal of the archive from the start is to build awareness and elevate her profile for a new generation of fans. Too long, these pioneers of drag have been overlooked as the industry has exploded in popular culture. They deserve their flowers.💐
So while the goal of the archive is not to sell merch, merch comes with the territory. You haven’t made it as a movie star until they make toys from your movie! Famous things spawn fabulous collectibles!
I’ve always felt that Vegas In Space was valuable intellectual property and in this world, IP is everything. The creators Philip R Ford and Miss X deserve to benefit from their creation and I thought it was an opportunity waiting to happen. Vegas has often been monetized online over the years without any consent of the creators. I was proud to do this right and license this property and give it everything I had.
This is queer pop culture made by queer artists. Vegas In Space belongs to us and we clearly can’t always rely on the mainstream to do right with our stories and identities. We make our own pop culture and they can’t take that away from us.
